The secret to the success of Dr. Durham's forums and discussions on Hip-Hop culture lies in his authenticity. As a sincere fan of the Hip-Hop culture, an erudite, and one who possesses first-hand knowledge of cultures of oppression, he has the ability to demonstrate the emotion, intelligence, shortcomings, and successes of Hip-Hop culture.
Understanding Hip-Hop to be a culture in its own right, Dr. Durham also recognizes Hip-Hop to be a product of the racial and socio-political oppression of African-Americans. With a musical lineage that borrows from Negro spirituals, Jazz, the Blues, Funk, and early protest rap, contemporary rap music is the product of African rhythms and African oral resistance to oppression. As a product of African-American resistance, a thorough discussion of Hip-Hop includes discussions on race, power, fear, oppression, and resistance. As one who is dedicated to perfecting our union, Dr. Durham utilizes history, taboo topics, and a large dose of sincerity in order to challenge lay thought. This being the case, Dr. Durham attempts to provide young audiences with an understanding that Hip-Hop is participatory movement that requires their HONEST opinions and FULL participation in order to reach to its full maturation. Hip-Hop makes a "call" and they, in turn, must "respond."

"I loved how Dr. Durham would incorporate actual pieces of media into the lecture and encouraged class discussion and participation. He followed the book, but also introducted us to things outside of the text that were interesting and beneficial."
